glimpses of 1956

I get so annoyed with the ads in fashion magazines today.  That's when I even look at fashion magazines...which is very rarely.  So why is it I love the ads in old magazines?  Here are several glimpses of 1956--through its ads.

  1. Sometimes the ads in old magazines are just as good or better than the content. Did ad people just get lazy? Are we, as consumers, not demanding more of our ad experience? :-)

I'm so disappointed in magazines lately, period. I've given up on buying any new ones, because I get them home and they're boring. Give me one from 1956 any day.

    1. Well, that was a seriously deranged smiley-face.

  2. I want to see Rock Husdon's movie now and the teenager's phone ad was too cute, even want the furnature in it.

    1. Danielle, it's been awhile since I've seen All That Heaven Allows...it's very soapy and dramatic, but worth seeing for the 50s costumes and set decor, I think. The Todd Haynes film Far from Heaven (2002) is a great homage to it.

  3. yes the telephone ad...adorable. The artwork was just so charming, or was it charming back then...or just now?
anyway I'd take it over photoshopped cleavage any day!

  4. I love looking at old ads too. Lauren is so right in that they are often sometimes better than the actual content!

How adorble is the matching fabric of the chair and curtains in the telephone advertisement?!
