miss marple style

Here we have two English ladies.  Though I do love red--and her necklace--it's not the glamorous gal on the left whose outfit I covet.  I'll take Miss Marple's plaid, belted cape, her tweed skirt, and both of her bags!

Miss Marple is, arguably, Agatha Christie's most famous character.  She has been portrayed on film and television by a number of actresses, and Marple aficionados will argue over which one is the best.  I have no opinion on that, except to say that the fact that Disney has chosen Jennifer Garner to play Miss Marple in an adaptation of the books is an a prime example of how Hollywood will take any great thing that has been created and then go on to happily ruin it in order to make a buck.

The Marple books are the epitome of the cozy British mystery, and the television adaptations do great justice to what Christie put on paper.  The stories are pretty much always set in my ideal version of life: an English country home, everyone drinking cocktails, dressing for dinner, wearing tweed and cozy sweaters.  But with a bit of murder! added in.

These screenshots are from Marple: Ordeal by Innocence.  You can find it on Netflix.  Miss Marple wears the best sweaters.  With her tweed skirts.

Love the tweedy herringbone coat and ascot scarflette.  I'll pass on the hat, though.

Can I live here please?  This isn't even the main house.  It's just the lodge.  It'll do just fine for me, though.

Oh.  Hello there.  I barely even noticed you, man in a tux.  Aren't you the famous actor, Richard Armitage?  How odd for you to show up here!  The family of the house is all dressed up here, either because they were psyched Miss Marple had arrived, or because they always dress up to play charades.  I don't know.  I'm just happy to see Richard Armitage in a tux.  This was the best photo I could get of my favorite of the womens' outfits--the plaid dress and blue sweater to the right of Richard.

Not-at-all-gratuitous tweedy goodness.

This is probably my favorite outfit in the whole production (sorry, Miss Marple).  I need this outfit for my own autumn backyard badminton games!  The perfect pants, and the perfect jacket.  It is corduroy.

Armitage in doubled-up cozy knitwear.  Gah.  He is sitting beside his crazy sister-in-law, with whom he has been cheating on his wife.  Bad man!

Here are a few Miss Marple-y pieces I discovered on Etsy:

Tweed cape from VeriteVintage.

Pumpkin sweater from retromomo.

1940s Irish tweed suit from MonDesirVintage.

Weekender carpet bag from MsTips.

  7. Wait, what?! Jennifer Garner is going to play Miss Marple? I so do not understand contemporary movies. Whatever.

Anyway, you've found some really great pieces that are totally Miss Marple (at least the way I always think of her). I think the Joan Hickson ones are my favorite.
