the vintage conundrum

I wear a US women's size 16, and often feel that it's very hard to find vintage in my size. And so, when we suddenly unearthed a wee cache of deadstock 1950s cotton day dresses with amazing prints all in--or near--my size, the temptation was to keep them all!

However, the truth is, it's not impossible, or even all that difficult, to find excellent vintage in a wide range of sizes. (My overstuffed closet will attest to this.) What's difficult is finding something that fits you perfectly. With that in mind, I tried on all seven dresses and decided to only keep the three that really fit me well. That means the above four dresses will be coming to the shop! Check out the prints.

That blue dress, in particular, is hard for me to give up. Just look at the amazing print! Sweaters, jackets and blouses on dress forms...and are those colorful discs meant to be hats?

But I am consoling myself with these three keepers.

The center dress has not only a fabulous Egyptian theme print, but nifty crescent-shaped pockets with green piping. I also love floral prints on black backgrounds, and have been jonesing for one of my own.

Now I own two.

  3. I'm looking forward to some outfit posts, Miss K!
And YES I too love it when I find a dress that fits me perfect, it's like a moment of the stars lining up. I remember it first happened when I was in high school, and you know what? It was a vintage dress. :)

  5. I was just talking to my best friend last night about how hard it is to be a seller and not keep everything! Particularly day dresses! They're the hardest things to give up.

  6. Geez...my heart is really thumping for that Egyption one...You lucky girl.

It's true about sizing, sometimes I wear an 8 sometimes I wear a 14. And truthfully it just all depends how they hit your curves.

  12. Love 'em. Something must be in the vintage winds -- I wear a 10/12 US and I JUST stumbled upon a boat load of 1940s dresses all L, XL, and XXL. They've been selling like hotcakes and it's been ever so hard not to keep them all. I've got a quite a weakness for 40s dresses.

  13. The print on that blue dress is fabulous! I couldn't believe you'd want to give it up until you showed the ones you are keeping! I especially like the black floral one with the white detail. Lovely!

  18. I'm a curvier lady too (I wear a contemporary 10/12) so it's hard for me not to buy a vintage dress just because it's a larger size. Luckily I do have a mom who can tailor my dresses so even if it's not the perfect fit I'll get it (if the price is right).

    Love all the novelty prints!
