frozen road trip

When you work for yourself, you tend to work seven days a week, and way more than the standard eight hours a day.  But you can set your own hours.  And if you feel like taking off for a day to hit a bunch of thrift stores (yes, work...but the fun part) and look at frozen Lake Michigan, you can do that.

The temperature was somewhere in the teens yesterday.  It was cold, but not too uncomfortable.  However, the winds near the lake made it arctic.  There was no question of actually venturing out on a stroll on the frozen lake. 

So we got back in the warm truck and headed back down the road.  Where we found a little tavern that served good beer.

And then we saw the most amazing sunset on the lake.  The frozen snow made this photo look like it was taken from an airplane flying between cloud banks.  But it's just the beauty of a frozen Lake Michigan.

shop accessories preview: Herpolsheimer's, Hudson's and Hoekstra

I have spent the morning researching the items in this shop accessories preview before I posted it, and I have to admit, it made me feel a little depressed.  These items nearly all came from Michigan stores--mom and pop shoe stores, high end department stores and boutiques, old timey dry goods stores--that are no longer in existence.  How I wish I could still walk into Hoekstra's shoe store or Herpolsheimer's to shop!  Forget Target and WalMart.  (Seriously.  Forget them.)

The items in this preview came from the following Michigan stores, none of which are around any more:  Hoekstra Shoes, J.L. Hudson Company, Manistee Slippers, Herpolsheimer's, Charles Trankla and Co.

They will begin appearing in the shop today.

shop preview: gunmetal taffeta, sunshine linen, and a Russian princess coat

This shop preview has a Russian princess coat, velvet-accented taffeta, and plaid wool...it also has some sunshine-y linen and grass green gingham!  Because, even if it doesn't look at all like it in my neck of the woods, it will eventually be spring in the northern hemisphere.

street style: tartan, granny chic, and bundled up Finns

It's time for another street style post.  And since it's winter in the northern hemisphere, I've seen many fantastic, inspiring outfits!

Tartan!  I love how the gal in that first photo is echoing the fella's red plaid coat with her scarf.  They match without being grotesque.  I could not find a real source for the fellow in the center, but I think we can all agree that he is killing it.  I love a man in a duffel coat.  Or a pea coat.  The girl on the far right is adorable, and I would have definitely worn a version of this outfit (creepers, plaid shorts with tights) in the 1980s.

The ladies (and men!) of Helsinki seem to have the most fun of anyone in the world getting dressed--if the Hel-Looks site is anything to go by.  And they certainly know how to wear cold weather gear and look great doing it.

Got a favorite among all these looks?  I'm leaning toward granny chic in the yellow coat, but I've been dressing like the female half of the Mancorialist couple a lot this winter.
