the cloche

As a Richard Armitage superfan (or soldier in the Armitage Army, if you prefer), I have made it my business to fully explore the man's ouevre.  Which means watching every available production he's been in, no matter how minor the part.  Even if he sports a cheesy little mustache and plays a smarmy bastard.  Malice Aforethought (a 2006 Mystery! production based on the 1931 novel by Frances Iles) wasn't a terrible strain, however.  I never mind getting to watch and hear Richard Armitage.  And I'm not sure there's much I love more than a cozy murder mystery set in 1920s-1930s England.

I expected to see some lovely fashions in this production, but what really stood out was the variety of cloche hats.  For someone like me who rarely wears a hat (though I do try), it's hard to imagine a time when hats were not just something to keep your head warm on a freezing day, but an integral part of your ensemble, one that wasn't removed when you were indoors.  (Also, you can see how this gal has moved up in the world since marrying Armitage's character, who apparently has a lot of money.  Here she wears furs and a velvet cloche, whereas previous to the marriage she wears a simpler felt cloche or a beret.)

Love both the hat and the printed velvet coat here.

Trial scenes: great for viewing large groups of ladies and their headgear.

I loved the variety of cloches on display throughout this production, some simple, others decorated with fanciful folds or trim.

Not a cloche, but a really cute beret and coat.

a perfect summer meal

We've been craving chilled avocado-cucumber soup all summer, but it hasn't been hot enough for it. Until now. We couldn't find the recipe, so I did an internet search and found this recipe from the LA Times. Andy (who is a fabulous cook) whipped it up for us tonight along with the sandwich I can't get enough of lately: fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil paninis.

Doesn't that look good? We didn't have buttermilk for the soup, so Andy just mixed up some milk and sour cream. We also added a little fresh dill and chopped green onions. It was much tastier than I remembered our old recipe being.

Oh, and the cucumbers, basil, and dill all came from the garden of some friends. Andy is going to take care of their chickens while they are away, and in exchange, we get whatever comes out of their garden. In August. Needless to say, this makes us both very happy. We have plenty of room for a garden, and have attempted them in the past, but we just don't seem to be able to put the time in that's required. (We even let our herb garden go to seed, we've been so busy this summer, which is very sad.) We are very lucky that to be surrounded by generous and kind gardeners!

And now, here is the rest of that shop preview I promised you.

a humid cary grant sunday

The hot and uber-humid summer weather typical of Michigan finally hit us today, putting a big, hot wet blanket over everything. Happily, storms blew through this evening with Wizard of Oz-like gusty winds, and seem to have taken the humidity with them. I am happy--humidity is my enemy!

Despite the ick weather, I got a lot of photographing done. That's probably because I could better catch the occasional breeze while "in my studio" (a.k.a. "on the deck"). The delicious iced mocha Andy made me (he makes the best coffee; I think that's partly why I fell for him) and the bits of TCM's Cary Grant marathon I got to see in between trips to the deck made it much easier. I took so many photos, I'll split up the rest of this coming week's sneak peek into two posts.

But first! I want to share the little profile that Team Treasury, the wonderful Etsy team that I'm on, just posted about me. TeamT contacted me to ask if I wanted to join them earlier this summer, and I'm so glad I did! Yes, for the very first time ever in my life, I got spirit. Yes I do. I got spirit. Team Spirit! *shakes pom poms*

Anyway, I was truly honored to be asked to join them, especially after I saw some of their shops! Holy moly, there are TALENTED artisans on Etsy, and they are well represented on Team Treasury. We have a little bit of everything on TeamT: dress and purse makers, painters, jewelry makers, artists in felt, crochet, knitting, ceramic and glass, soap and candle makers...not to mention another super-cool vintage clothing seller, BrownBagVintage. So please follow
this link to the Team Treasury blog to check out the profile, and while you're there, you should visit some of the Etsy shops that are linked on the lefthand margin. Betcha you'll find something nifty to buy!

And now without further ado, here's a little preview of what I have coming to Etsy this week.

Hats!

Tonight, the long-awaited Hat Preview!

But first I want to share with you my latest favorited Etsy item, from
meekssandygirl's shop. She makes gorgeous crocheted cashmere necklaces, corsages, and sculpture. I found her when one of her necklaces was featured on the Etsy front page this afternoon. I just love the colors in this lemon necklace:

Isn't it lovely? I want it! It's one of the simpler pieces. She also has beautiful, intricate poppy and bluebell necklaces. Go check out her shop!

And without further ado, Hat Preview! This 1960s peridot or pistachio green raffia bucket hat is already in the shop:
