frozen road trip

When you work for yourself, you tend to work seven days a week, and way more than the standard eight hours a day.  But you can set your own hours.  And if you feel like taking off for a day to hit a bunch of thrift stores (yes, work...but the fun part) and look at frozen Lake Michigan, you can do that.

The temperature was somewhere in the teens yesterday.  It was cold, but not too uncomfortable.  However, the winds near the lake made it arctic.  There was no question of actually venturing out on a stroll on the frozen lake.

So we got back in the warm truck and headed back down the road.  Where we found a little tavern that served good beer.

And then we saw the most amazing sunset on the lake.  The frozen snow made this photo look like it was taken from an airplane flying between cloud banks.  But it's just the beauty of a frozen Lake Michigan.

(You've already seen these photos if you follow me on Instagram.  If you want to see more shots from road trips, sneak peeks of new items, and the occasional photo of a cocktail I've made, follow me there!)

more wintry street style

Winter seems to be having a hard time loosening its grip on the northern hemisphere.  (We still have a frozen lake and snow on the ground here in Michigan.  I have not yet stashed away my winter coats.)  This apparently hasn't stopped many stylish ladies from getting out and looking fabulous, as evidenced by several of my favorite street style looks from the past two months.

I love all three of these looks so much, and one thing they all have in common (and which I always struggle with) is the wearing of amazing headgear.  Some day maybe I'll learn how to rock a headscarf the way Solanah and that fashionable Helsinki gal do.

That red embroidered coat is just amazing, and I love the combination of maroon/burgundy and gray that Wikki is wearing.  My favorite, though, might be the young woman on the left, who is kinda grunge (plaid, creepers, pea coat, knit hat), but super cute.  And I'm loving the coat and big cozy scarf worn in the Copenhagen snow, on the right.  I just love seeing fashionable folk actually out in the snow!

snow

Just some photographic proof that we did get a massive amount of snow this year.

We still have snow, but not this much.

I love it.  It makes everything feel cozy.

I need a haircut crazy badly.

embracing winter

When you live in a place that is cold and gray most of the winter (like Michigan), you can handle it a couple of ways. You can complain a lot, dream of warmer places, stay indoors, or go out and try to embrace it.

I try to do a combination of the last two.

My best friend Stephani visited us this weekend and we first embraced the winter by having a bonfire Friday night (after we dressed Lucy up in this ridiculous elf costume that Stephani bought her--thanks, Stephani!).

We got some rare winter sunshine on Sunday. It heated up the house (the whole side of our house is a wall of big windows), making us all a little lethargic, so we stepped out for a bracing walk on the lake.

I love the lake most in winter. I think it's at its most beautiful then.
