i saw the crescent...

...you saw the whole of the moon
I spoke about wings
You just flew
I wandered, I guessed, and I tried
You just knew
I sighed
But you swooned!
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon

Which has nothing to do with anything here, except that I've been listening to--and completely loving--The Waterboys lately. They were a favorite of mine during college (though their first albums came out when I was in high school). I am not overly musically nostalgic, in that I don't think the music of my youth was the best ever. (I truly hate a lot of 80s music and think it's crap.) But rediscovering The Waterboys has been utter happiness.

And that is what love of vintage is all about, no? Rediscovering quality items from the past, and giving them new life, and delighting in them!

Here's this week's shop preview. Things are starting to get all cozy up in here!

out and about

This past weekend Andy and I spent at home working--on business (weekends are meaningless when you don't work for The Man), and trying to get further along in our home renovation work, which is moving at a snail's pace. But last week we did manage to get out and about a little bit.

We headed downtown to check out some more ArtPrize offerings before it ended. This outdoor sculpture, a giant redwood stump you could climb up into, was pretty cool.

The inside walls were papered with photos of a forest. Images of owls were projected on the walls of the building the piece was placed at, but since we were there in the daytime, they weren't really visible.

Andy and I both loved these insane Eames loungers, overstuffed with bloated human torsos, at the UICA.

And I loved this piece, by an artist named Lora Fosberg from Bloomington, Indiana. Here are just a few small tastes of it.

I don't think I've ever posted pics of this place in the blog before, but it's one of my favorite Grand Rapids buildings.

See the gargoyles on top? Their eyes glow red at night!

Aside from ArtPrize, we were lucky to get a very brief visit from our pal Dave, who was in town from Las Vegas to speak to art students at his Alma Mater, Kendall. (Dave is an *amazing* artist! You can see his work here.) To celebrate Dave's visit, our friend Mark (with assistance from Andy) took us all out for a spins in his pedicabs. I love this shot of Mark spinning his Green Machine next to a Hummer!

Andy was once a pedi-cabbie. I was a little nervous riding in his cab (I had to hold on to Lucy, who was ready to bolt from the cab at the several tasty squrirrels she saw, and I was additionally having flashbacks to a terrible Andy-powered jet ski experience several years ago), but it was fine once I relaxed. Look how beautiful that autumnal foliage is behind Andy.

a little more from the D

Just a few more snapshots from our little holiday in Detroit.

No trip to the D is complete without German food and song at the Dakota Inn.

Andy and I spent a day thrifting. For me, it was kind of a dud. He found some good guy stuff, but things were a bit bleak on the lady side. However, I was very excited to find this cool old children's book...

...which had this hilariously sad bunny in it. "I can not get out!" Oh my.

Also, we got to have delicious crepes, coffee and chocolate cake at this place (which I know of thanks to Lauren. Thank you, Lauren!).

We got to take Lucy for a beautiful walk at Kensington Park. Lucy was a bit freaked out by the sand hill cranes hanging out in the parking lot like mean teenagers.

Oops. No dogs allowed. Even cute Lucy-like lowriders in bowlers and sweaters. (No worries--we did not take Lucy on the nature trails. We care about wildlife, too!)

The birthday girl did not get loaded, but did have a good time. Some stranger bought her a shot of Makers Mark. Happy birthday, Lady Stephani!
