sunshine is the best disinfectant

And not just in public policy. And really, for our purposes, it's the best deodorant. Some of our recent estate find reeks of mothballs (a scent that I don't mind so much, but I believe I'm in the minority). One of the best ways to get rid of bad smells in vintage is a nice long sunbath. We were supposed to get rain today, but luckily, have had loads of sunshine instead, so our yard is currently a vintage lover's playground.

I originally hung these in my usual place--the line under our deck. Unfortunately, that's not the sunniest spot, so Andy rigged a rope line from our apple tree in the center of the yard to the deck, supporting the line with...criss-crossed cross-country skis! Isn't he clever?

And check out this amazing mermaid fabric! I am so in love with this print, but have no idea what I'd do with it. I'm no seamstress, so I should probably let it go, but...check out that accordion-playing mermaid!

  7. I love the novelty print fabric! And such a good idea about putting the clothes in the sun. My mom actually used to make us put our bed mattresses out in the sun for a day when we were kids, "to give 'em a good airing out". It does help. :)

  8. Love these photos! The go go boots in my shop had to air out for days. I don't think they saw daylight since 1966.

Ha! My backyard looked just the same this afternoon. My pergola looked like 15 people were hanging from the rafters! The photos are lovely...

  13. I've got a few items that I picked up at the last flea market that are smelling pretty musty. I will definitely give the sunbath a go, thanks for the tip! Now if only the sun would start shining around here again, it's been foggy and gray for the past two days straight :( Come back summer!

  17. Is there a selvedge on the mermaid fabric that gives any details about it. I am looking for a mermaid fabric to make a baby quilt for my neice-to-be who is arriving this summer. This one is perfect!!

    1. Hello kacameron. I'm sorry to say, this fabric sold quite a long time ago. (I'm not sure if you noticed, but this blog post is over two years old!)
